JAMAICA-Me Smile - Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee from Catahoula

Image
"Timber" had informed all the "Catahoulans" about his holiday shipment of a limited supply of Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee. And while I really had planned to get a pound to give as a gift to a very special person. . .I ran out of dough ;0 So, imagine my surprise when I walked into Catahoula after Mass last Sunday (must have been a sign, right?) and saw that there were two half-pound bags left at the discounted price of $20.00 per half pound. Then I faced a very tough decision - do I buy the moisturizer that I need or do I go for the Blue Mountain? And I think you know the rest of the story. . . So, even though my skin is chapped - my heart is happy. Thanks, Timber! (and by the way, he has a lot of other very special coffees, including, my favorite "Lola" Blend). http://www.catahoulacoffee.com/

Perfect Endings - "Metropolitan" French Roast Coffee

Image
I went to a very nice affair at the Lake Merritt Hotel over the weekend. The event was held in the Terrace Room. Usually, you don't go to these types of affairs for the food, you go for the fellowship and to get all fancied up :) BUT. . .kudos to the Chef because the food was off the hook! And to top it all off, they served the best coffee with a decadent variety of desserts. The coffee was so good that I had to call the restaurant today to find out what they served. Well, turns out it is Metropolitan Coffee (which apparently is distributed/made by Sara Lee Foods). They serve the French Roast blend which is so smooth and not at all bitter and had no sediment or aftertaste. The only thing better than a good cup of coffee is a great cup of coffee at the end of a great meal! Who even knew Sara Lee made coffee??

DUDE!! DIAL BACK THE CAFFEINE!!

Image
According to an Associated Press article, a 52 year old man in Michigan who was stabbed during an attempted robbery, did what any normal person would do - he called for an ambulance. Then, this is where his caffeine addiction kicked in and the story takes a twisted turn. Before the ambulance arrived, he walked HALF A MILE to a diner and ordered a cup of coffee with a knife sticking out of his chest. To read the entire story, copy and paste the link below in your browser: http://www.startribune.com/nation/79977167 Geez. . .I thought I loved coffee.

A Feel Good Christmas

Image
What a wonderful day this has been. I've enjoyed the company of family and friends and am capping off the day with a hot cup of Weaver's Holiday Blend - boy does John Weaver know coffee! And to go with my Weaver's Holiday Blend, I'm going to have myself a fresh cranberry orange scone from the "Feel Good Gourmet" in Miami. Now, all I need is a nice holiday movie to end the day. Any suggestions? I feel good. Merry Christmas to All, And To All A Hot Cup of Coffee!!

A Kinder, Gentler Coffee House - Tully's Embarcadero Two, San Francisco

Image
Even though I appreciate working in a big city, sometimes I just want to take time to smell the grounds. Know what I mean? So, today, two days before Christmas, with no shopping done, I thought, "Why don't I just go sit in Tully's and have myself a nice cup of coffee." The thing I love about this coffee shop is not only the great coffee, but the friendly people who work here. They make each customer feel important and they never rush you. There's always a newspaper lying around and if you're lucky, you can sit in one of the oversized cushy leather chairs. You might even find a group of women knitting at the "big table." It's like having an independent coffee house right in the middle of a high rise. :) Enjoy the season.

Tea People Are Nice People - Puripan Tea Garden

Image
I was on Santana Row in San Jose yesterday and visited the Puripan Tea Garden. The people there are so nice. And boy do they know a lot about tea. They sell all different kinds of teas with a focus on Korean tea. And, although I can't tell you what the difference is between the various teas, they sure can. So, the guy behind the counter is making up all these samples for people to try. Free samples. So, I get the Aloe Tea and my daughter gets the Ginger Tea. But this particular tea is not being made from a leaf or a bag, he's taking it out of a jar like jelly. And I don't really know how he steeped it, but it was really good. They have teapots and tea cups and tea spoons and mugs and just about everything a tea drinker could possibly want. If I'm in the area, I'll drop in again - for the tea, but mainly because they were so darn nice! Sleigh Bells Ringing - Celestial Seasonings Holiday Teas

Image
I love coffee. My daughter loves tea. I drink so much coffee, that I have pledged to try to drink more tea. I was researching teas and found out about CELESTIAL SEASONINGS HOLIDAY TEA COLLECTION. I remembered how much I used to love their Red Zinger tea. I'd have my cup of Red Zinger right next to the incense tray. Remember those? That was back when I thought that those huge bamboo fans were high class wall decorations! Anyway, if you think I'm picky about my coffee - my daughter is even pickier about her tea. So, the point is, I ran across the line of teas at my favorite natural grocery store. And they were on sale for 2.99 a box. 2.99 a box? For 20 tea bags? Stocking stuffers here we come. I figured I should check it out first. I tried the Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride. Which, by the way, I'm told is really hard to find. I'd buy it again for the smell alone. The tea itself is quite light. A perfect "nightcap." The holiday line includes: Candy Cane

Is That A Partridge In A Pear Tree??

Image
Oh, no. It's a Peet's ornament. Absolutely could not resist picking this up when I went in for my morning coffee. I have collected so many ornaments over the years and well there are plenty of coffee cup ornaments from other coffee shops - but this is the first time that I can remember Peet's doing something like this. I think it's perfect as a stocking stuffer or as a nice little trinket to give to your office Kris Kringle. Sure to be a collectible. Of course, pretty much everything is collectible to me!

Weaver's Coffee Holiday Blend - "Down to Earth"

Image
There was a guy named John Weaver. John Weaver wanted to be the best at what he did and what he did was make fine Artisan coffees. In fact, he was what you would call a "Master." John Weaver was so serious about his craft that he apprenticed under two coffee giants, Sal Bonavita and the late Alfred Peet. John started his own company, "Weaver Coffee" in 2007. I brewed a pot of the "Holiday Blend" this morning. The Holiday Blend is nice and mild - dark-roasted. Dark roasted, but not "in your face." The beans are nice and "sticky" just the way I like them. My friend tried a cup and called it "earthy." I like that word. Perfect for getting or giving for the holidays. wwww.weaverscoffee.com You can find it at Whole Foods and other gourmet stores throughout the country. If you can't find it, give them a call at 800-328-1178. They'll be glad to help. Thanks, John Weaver. You made my morning a little more mellow. I th

Ready for the Monday Morning Grind with My New Capresso Grinder

Image
I love freshly ground coffee. The only problem was that with my old $20.00 grinder (no name needed), my coffee grounds looked more like sawdust ;0 There was no way to control the grind which is a problem if you like to change your brewing methods. Sometimes I use my Chemex, mostly I use an automatic drip coffee maker, but there are times that I prefer the French press and even times (especially on weekends), that I like to use my Paula Deen stovetop percolator. Problem solved with the Capresso Stainless Steel Burr Grinder. I "test drove" it on Friday night, Saturday morning, Saturday night and Sunday morning. Each time with a different brew method and each time with perfect results. I'm sure that there's something better out there for professional use, but if you're just an everyday "Joe" who loves her coffee, at 59.99 this is a great grinder. Some of the features include: * 17 position grind selector delivers the correct fineness for espresso, drip,

I'm Dreaming Of a White Christmas - Tea by Lupicia

Image
I would never replace my morning cup of coffee with a cup of tea, but just about this time of the afternoon, I sure do like the taste of Lupicia's White Christmas on a cold December day. My daughter bought me this tea last year as part of a Holiday Sampler and I went back to the store and bought enough to hoard at least until April. I squealed with delight when I passed the Lupicia store yesterday and remembered that Holidays mean Holiday Teas and that means White Christmas Tea by Lupcia. A blend of black tea, apricot and white chocolate - makes me feel like a kid again! www.lupicia.com

If you don't eat meat, this is not the donut for you - Dynamo Donuts Maple Bacon Donut

Image
OMG - if you had told me that I would eat a maple bacon donut and totally love it - I would have said "Maple and bacon in a donut?" But it's really good. Think of a stack of light, fluffy pancakes, with bacon on the side - and washed down by a cup of Ethiopian Yergacheffe. Now that's good eating! Newman's Own French Roast - A Favorite of Butch Cassidy's

It's Organic, It's Fair Trade Certified and it's SOOOO good! Who could ask for anything more? I'm full of energy today. Had two cups of Newman's Own Organics French Roast Coffee (TM). Gareth says: "Its great. It has a traditional flavor to it, like a nice house brew." From Green Mountain Coffee Roasters "We're going to run out unless we can get to that mule and get some more." It's EIGHT O'CLOCK - do you know where your coffee is?

Image
Trivia Question of the Day: Who has been making great coffee for 150 years? * A) Santa Claus B) Eight O'Clock Coffee Company C) Mother Goose D) Old Man River I just happened to make it to Buttercream Bakery just as they were closing last night. They make the best pastries. Anyway, the owner gave me a big bag of "leftovers." You know what they say "waste not, want not." I woke up this morning and thought, "what would go well with that lovely croissant?" Looked in the cupboard and there was a fresh bag of Eight O'Clock French Roast. C'est bon! www.eightoclock.com * Answer: ALL OF THE ABOVE!

Take Time To Taste the Tea

Image
I broke rank this morning. My first cup is ALWAYS coffee. Last night, my daughter and I rode with my sister to take my niece to the airport for her return trip to Miami. Just as we pulled off, this amazing scent found its way up my nostrils. "What are you drinking,?" I asked. "Tea," was my daughter's response. "What kind of tea?" "White Ayurvedic Chair and Samurai Chai Mate." Okay, that's a mouthful. Anyway, I was so intrigued, that I asked her to make me a cup this morning. Breathe, Stretch - Let it Go! Change is good. www.teavana.com

"Wake the (BLEEP) Up" - Extra Strong Coffee

Image
Okay, I'm awake now. Big Mike went to Nawlins for the Po Boy Festival last weekend and brought me back a bag of "Wake the ____ Up" coffee. He said that he bought it for the name, but I'll buy it again for the charge. It's super strong but the taste is great. I did some "surfing" and found out that it's a favorite of those who work graveyard shifts and people in the television industry. When you need something to keep you awake for those finals or that long drive home, this would be it. www.wakethefup.net When "strong" coffee isn't strong enough. This stuff gives a whole new meaning to "Black Friday."

What Kind of Coffee Goes With Sweet Potato Pie?

Image
I am so thankful for my health, my family, my friends, my blog and coffee. I'm also thankful that my dear ole Mama taught me how to make a sweet potato pie that's not stringy! Nothing worse than a stringy sweet potato pie. I'm thinking maybe I'll go for some Yuban brewed in the percolator - just for old time's sake. What do you think?

What's In Your Chemex (TM)?

Image
"The Chemex® coffeemaker was invented by Peter J. Schlumbohm, Ph.D., in 1941. Schlumbohm was born in Kiel, Germany in 1896. He received his doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Berlin. After several trips to the United States, he settled in New York City in 1936. Over the years, he invented over 3,000 items for which he was granted patents. However, his coffeemaker and carafe kettles were his most long enduring inventions." Great coffee does not come quickly. That's why I don't use my Chemex every morning, but since today was Thanksgiving Eve, I thought I would take the extra time to make a darn good cup of coffee. Today's blend "Thanksgiving" from Starbucks. How appropriate, huh? To learn more about Chemex, visit: http://www.chemexcoffeemaker.com/

A Nice Caffeine Boost With a Shot of Vitamin C

My pick of the day: PINE MOUNTAIN COFFEE MANDARIN CHOCOLATE Before you say, "no," give it a try. I thought that it would taste like those chocolate jelly orange stick candy things that my Great-Aunt (God Rest Her Soul) used to try to force us to eat as kids - but surprise - it's a very mild flavor. Here's what people who tried it said: "This stuff is awesome." "It's a really subtle hint of flavor which is nice." :) Thanks to Mary for picking this up for me while she was at the Mandarin Orange Festival in Placerville this past weekend. If you don't live near Placerville, give them a call. I'm sure they'd be happy to ship some to you! A Cup Is Not Just a Cup

Image
My first cup of the day means so much more to me than "just a cup of coffee." It represents a new day - another chance. Sort of like "liquid hope." I started today with a cup of Catahoula Kenya Peaberry. I drank it out of one of my favorite mugs. My friend, Celeste, sent me this mug in 1998. It was a rough time in my life. The cup simply says "Someone In Houston Loves You." That's all. Have a great day!

My Nephew Went to Vancouver. . .And I Got A Pound of Coffee - MUCH Better Than A Tee-Shirt!

Image
Remember - be kind to the children for when you are old they will buy you gourmet coffee and when the time comes (hopefully), they will visit you at the nursing home. I'm such a lucky duck. I have a nephew who is a world-traveler and fortunately for me, he never forgets his dear old aunt. That would be me - the coffee addict. I found on my doorstep yesterday, the cutest red bag in which was a pound of GUATEMALA PALHU HUEHUETENANGO which just turns out to be some of the best coffee I've had in a while. I looked up the website for the coffee shop, CAFE ARTIGIANO - tres chic. And the coffee is ottimo! Thanks, Mike! http://www.caffeartigiano.com/

Wanted to get my feng-shui on last night. Met my friend, Dede, for tea. I love coffee. Dede only drinks tea. Ying and yang. We went to the cutest tea bar on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland. La Myx . It's a great place to meet, eat, sip and reflect. I had the "Oriental Beauty," which is an oolong tea and Dede had chai with milk. I also had mochi to go along with my tea. Everything Old Is New Again - and Thus Began the 2009 Battle of the Instant Brew

Image
I was walking to the train station last night and out of the dark, I heard, "Free Coffee!" What? Did someone say "free coffee?" I immediately stopped in my tracks - thank goodness I was wearing rubber soled shoes - and made a 45 degree turn right into the face of a smiling young woman with a bright red apron holding two fists full of "Taster's Choice." I'm no snob, but I am a bit skeptical about this whole new instant coffee craze. I tried the Starbucks Viva Instant a few weeks ago and it's good (for instant coffee), but would drinking this Taster's Choice Instant jeopardize my reputation as a coffee afficianado? I dropped the free packet into my tote and got onto my train. This morning, I get off the train, exit the escalator and walk right into a guy in a red apron holding two fists full of "Taster's Choice." Must be a sign, right? We are in an economic downturn, and it was free, and hey "waste not, want not,"

Catahoula Indian Monsoon Malabar - 'Nuf Said

Image
Monsooned Malabar is a variety of dry processed coffee beans. The beans are exposed to the monsoon winds for a period of about three to four months, causing the beans to swell and lose the original acidity, resulting in a sweet and syrupy brew. The coffee is unique to the Malabar coast of Karnataka and Kerala and has protected status under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act. The name Monsooned Malabar is derived from exposure to the monsoon winds of the Malabar coast. The blend is heavy bodied, pungent and of monotone quality and is considered to be dry with a chocolatey aroma and a slightly sharp taste. The blend has its origins from the times of the British Raj, when, during the months that the beans were transported by sea from India to Europe, the humidity and the sea winds combined to cause the coffee to ripen from the fresh green to a more aged pale yellow. *Wikipedia Catahoula Coffee Company does it again. Timber - you are 'da man! Talk about the perfect blend for &q

What's More Fun Than A Barrel of Monkeys? FOUR Barrel Coffee on a Monday morning!!

Image
Okay, I'm awake now. On Saturday morning when I opened the bag to the Guatemala San Martin Concepción Buena Vista Blend , my first impression was of the visual presence of the beans. I noted no real glisten or stickiness to the beans. I did notice there were no burnt kernels or deformities like “"jelly belly bellyflops” which means a lot to me. The aroma was indeed pleasant and not overbearing. I ground the beans in a hand grinder being cautious to view the consistency of the grind several times and not input too much heat to the coffee during the grinding process. With water at temperature (brought to boil and allowed to sit for 1 minute) I made an individual cup. Thought the taste was great. Then this morning, I brewed a pot for the crew - and I have to say any time you can get an excellent pot of coffee from a generic office coffee pot, you know it's good coffee. Oldie - But A Goodie! Happy Belated Anniversary, Peerless!

Image
When I read in today's San Francisco Chronicle that Peerless Coffee celebrated its 85th anniversary last month, I got a little nostalgic. I started thinking about my first. The first time I learned about gourmet coffee. Peerless was my first. I won't tell you how many years ago that was, but it was before I needed needed reading glasses ;0 It was a ritual of sorts - trekking from my house to the Peerless Coffee Retail Outlet in Oakland. I remember that I went in every two weeks. My friend, Stephanie, and I would compare notes about which was the best blend - Mocha Java or French Roast. We were young, hip, spending money before we got it - hey, wait a minute - I'm still doing that. Whatever. But, it was not just the coffee, but the experience of walking into the store near Jack London Square, sampling a cup of whatever they were offering that day, checking out the latest in coffee pots and pumps and presses and the warm friendly smile of the bald gentleman with glasses
